Question from an old man.
My wife got me a membership at a local fitness club for Christmas. I
have been going regularly, since Jan 5. I am 68, never had any
serious health problems, but never did any serious exercise either. I
am 6’0" tall and started last year (April 2000) watching my diet. I
have gone from 218# down to 195. I still have a spare tire that I
would like to get rid of, as well as build muscle mass. I don’t want
to be Mr America, just stronger than I am.
I have been on a treadmill getting my heart rate up to 125 for about
30 minutes for 5 days a week. I do weight training three days a week.
Since I started exercise I have lost about three pounds. Hopefully I
have gained some muscle mass as well.
I see some change in my cardio work–getting my heart rate up to my
target seems to take a lot more effort than when I started. Resting
heart rate is 60bpm. Blood pressure is normally 125/75, and always
has been.
Am I doing it right? Comments please.

Glutes-Stairmaster,Elliptical,Treadmill, or Bike
I know all of these exercises will work my legs, but which will tone my Glutes
better? I know I should do squats for that too, but there is no squat machine
at the place I do the leg press machine though. As for aerobic exercise,
I’d like to hear some input on these machines.

I have been thinking of getting an elliptical trainer for home, since
I’m having a horrible time maintaining my workout schedule these days.
Are there any you recommend? I prefer to stay under $1000, but would
go over $1000 if there is an overwhelm reason I should…

Shoulder / Upper arm pain question
I am female and am a regular aerobics goer and have been attending aerobics,
weight-lifting sessions and circuits training 4 times a week but have been
experiencing left shoulder /arm joint pain for three months – this pain got
progressively worse and now I cannot bend my arm backwards as this would
result in excruciating pain. Also experiencing rheumatic-like pain in arm
at night. I have stopped doing the weight-lifting class (actually called
pump and tone) and the other classes for two months to see if it would put
things right but have not noticed any difference. What have I done to
myself and what can be done to get myself back to form again?
My doctor said it’s an inflammation in the joint (sports injury?) and
offered a steroid injection which I declined as I am not keen on the idea of
using steroids.
Any advice please?

Hi!
I’ve been attending aerobic classes for more than a year, at avery regular
basis, 6 classes a week, along with running 4 times a week, 8 miles.
I’ve noticed that my leg muscles are getting too big for my taste.
Please give me some advice about how to continue working out without looking
like a football player, and possibly thinning my legs.
Aerobic classis that I attend are Tai bo and Hi Low.
I am vegetarian: soy, fish..
